Growing up in Kolkata, Sagnick’s musical training began with Indian classical singing, eventually discovering the viola and violin. His growing interest in Western classical music subsequently brought him to Glasgow for further studies. His approach to sound and expression continues to be influenced by both these traditions and defined by a constant curiosity for the spaces in between.

''

He beautifully weaves together many strands … producing something distinct and filled with passion.

''

Since completing his studies at the University of Glasgow and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Sagnick has curated a varied artistic portfolio that spans across different cultures, styles, and eras - ranging from historically informed performance practices to creating new work as a composer-arranger, collaborator, and improviser.

Solo playing has taken him to venues such as Kings Place London, Queen’s Hall Edinburgh, and on air at BBC Radio Scotland. He is a co-founder of Haver Quartet and Alto Sync viola duo, and frequently appears as guest violist with chamber ensembles across the UK.

Recent orchestral highlights include performances with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra of India, as well as period ensembles such as the English Baroque Soloists and Dunedin Consort.
Sagnick is deeply committed to audience engagement through his work as a concert presenter and facilitator, and is equally active in education settings as a workshop leader, instrumental tutor and orchestral coach. His compositions and arrangements have been performed across the UK, ranging from participant-led collaborative compositions with young people to chamber and orchestral reworkings.

Curious to see how these ideas take shape in practice?

Sagnick has been fortunate to receive opportunities to develop his practice through schemes at Stoller Hall, Live Music Now, Wigmore Hall, Black Lives in Music, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He gratefully acknowledges contributions of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Loan Fund for Musical Instruments, We Are Here Scotland, the University of Glasgow, Sir Thomas Beecham Trust, Hennessy Scholarship, and individual donors who have supported his studies and creative projects.

When not musicking, he’s probably busy with experiments in the kitchen, enjoying a swim,
or exploring the beautiful Scottish outdoors!
